FAQs

Here are a few common questions I hear when people are considering teaching abroad in Europe:

"When should I start looking for a job teaching abroad?"

There are job fairs through the year, but many schools look to hire between January and May. They want to have positions filled well in advance of the upcoming academic year, so this gives them time to find the right candidates.

"Where can I find school's who are looking to hire international English teachers?"

There are a few ways to do this, but I've found that the most effective way is at international teaching job fairs, like the International School Services Job Fairs.

"Do I need a Bachelor of Education to teach abroad?"

No, you don't. Having a B.Ed. will increase your job opportunities abroad (it's required by certain schools). But if you don’t want to invest 4-6 years of your life studying at university, getting your Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate could be a good option for you (there's a sale on the course right now!).

TEFL is an internationally recognized certification to teach English as a Second Language (ESL). Courses are compact, intensive an designed to give you the foundation necessary to teach the English language to non-native speakers.

"Is this guide for me if I don't have a Bachelor of Education?"

Yes, this guide contains all of the practical steps you need to take in order to maximize your chance of finding an English teaching job in Europe (or elsewhere). However, keep in mind that certain schools in Europe require a B.Ed. or equivalent.

"Do I need teaching experience to teach English in Europe?"

You don't need experience to find an English teaching job in Europe. I got my job in Sweden straight out of university, and I have a lot of friends who did the same. That being said, there are many schools who do ask for 2+ years of experience, so your opportunities definitely increase once you have a few years of teaching under your belt.
